Bordered by Mount Royal Park to the west, Sherbrooke Street to the south, Little Italy to the north and Rosemont-Petite-Patrie to the east, the Plateau-Mont-Royal is a central borough of the city of Montreal.

Nicknamed, not without a touch of irony, the New France since the early 2000s, the legendary charm of the Plateau-Mont-Royal has attracted a large European population. Several French-inspired bakeries and boutiques have taken up residence there.

Art lovers will be pleased: several galleries are housed there, as well as the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal, the National Theatre School of Canada, the Grands Ballets Canadiens and several theaters (Rideau vert, La Licorne, Théâtre de Verdure, etc.). You also have access to several parks, such as Mount Royal Park, Jeanne Mance Park and La Fontaine Park.

For foodies, the Plateau is a destination of choice. Some of Montreal’s most iconic restaurants can be found there: the legendary smoked meat restaurant Schwartz’s, the must-try Au pied de cochon, as well as the St-Viateur Bagel, a bagel bakery that has been in business since 1957.

If you’re in the mood to do some shopping, head to Avenue du Mont-Royal, the Plateau’s main commercial artery. You’ll find all kinds of stores, such as bookstores and record stores (L’Échange, Aux 33 tours, Bouquinerie du Plateau), fashion and accessory boutiques (Adam & Eve, Boutique atelier fabriqué au Plateau B. Tessier, Lazy) and a multitude of other specialized boutiques to discover. In the summer, the Avenue is transformed into a pedestrian street and several events are organized there.

A young residential environment

With a population of 104,000 residents, the Plateau-Mont-Royal is largely home to the 25 – 44 age group, which represents 43% of residents. Next in line are the 45 – 64 year olds with 21%. As for households, 52% of them are made up of one person, while 30% are made up of two people.
A large majority of the borough’s population has a university degree: 57%. And, not surprisingly, French is the majority language, with 67% of residents speaking it at home.

The real estate aspect

The majority of Plateau-Mont-Royal residents are renters: 72% are, compared to 28% who represent the proportion of owners. You will also find buildings whose exterior looks like something out of Michel Tremblay’s Chronicles of the Plateau-Mont-Royal: 57% of them were built before the 1960s. But don’t be fooled by appearances: many have been renovated to bring them up to date, and you’re sure to find a gem.

How is the market doing?

61 single-family homes are currently on the market, with prices ranging from $521,852 to $2,850,000.
However, the Plateau’s real estate offer is mostly made up of condominiums. Currently, 274 condos are available on the market, with prices ranging from $189,000 to $4,850,000!

Plexes are also an important part of the real estate offer in the Plateau: there are currently 162 of them on the market. As for condos, they come in all price ranges: from $599,000 to $6,200,000.
